Welcome to Denzlingen Situated at the gateway to the valleys of the Elz and Glotter Denzlingen is the third largest municipality in the District of Emmendingen. It has 13.500 inhabitants and a catchment area of a further 30.000. In the past decades Denzlingen has developed from a small village of farms lining the Glotter Stream to a community with an urban infrastructure.
The Stork Tower in the Lower Village, St. George’s Church in the centre and the ruins of St. Severin’s Chapel on the Mauracher Berg (a wooded hill with vineyards) are ancient historic landmarks. Modern Denzlingen presents itself with the town hall, newly built in 1995, the redesigned town centre and the Kultur & Bürgerhaus (Citizens’ Centre for Cultural Activities) opened in 2003. Around 400 events and functions a year have quickly established the Centre as a significant cultural and conference venue for the surrounding area of Nördlicher Breisgau. Its outstanding architecture, its interesting programme of events and its setting beside a pond with delightful sun terraces make it very popular with visitors from far and near.
Denzlingen is a pro-family community with attractive housing for young and old. Children and young people profit from excellent educational and care facilities: there are six nursery schools, an outdoor kindergarten, two primary schools, a special school and all types of secondary schools including a grammar school. On offer are also new after-school care facilities, numerous clubs and societies and an education centre for children and adults (Volkshochschule). Exceptional facilities for sports and leisure activities, and also cycle tracks and walking path to the famous wine-growing Kaiserstuhl or to the Black Forest make Denzlingen a splendid place to do sport or simply to relax. You are welcome again to the in- and outdoor swimming-pool in Denzlingen after its reconstruction from May 2010. Around 80 clubs and associations offer cultural, sporting, social and leisure activities and support groups for young and old.
Shopping in Denzlingen is a pleasure. There are more than 90 shops and businesses and after a through redevelopment the village centre attracts many shoppers. There are ample shops in the Hauptstraße, Rosenstraße and Hindenburgstraße and a farmers’market in the Kohlerhof. Besides, the nearby library and multi-media centre together with its café in the renovates buildings of the “Rocca”, a former cigar factory, and the replanned area along the Glotter make the new centre ideal both for shopping and for taking it easy. The centre (“Kauftreff”) in the new housing scheme and smaller shopping centres in the Stuttgarter Straße and at the railway station provide easy shopping for the residential areas. The industrial estate is in the west. Long-establishes companies as well as new firms have achieved a considerable increase in tax revenue and jobs in recent years.
Alongside trade and industry farming and market-gardening continue to be important. Fruit and vegetable growing, the cultivation of maize and vines characterize the landscape. It is still a tradition for farmers to sell their produce at their own farms and you can best enjoy home-grown products in the local restaurants.
The environmentally friendly use of renewable energy is of great importance to the whole community as can be seen in the amount of privately and publicly funded solar heating which is in use (swimming baths, Kultur & Bürgerhaus, schools, old people’s home) or the small hydroelectric power station at the Rocca.
At the European level Denzlingen has a lively cultural exchange with its twin towns: Saint-Cyr-sur-Mer in France (since 1974), North Hykeham in England (since 1988) and Città della Pieve in Italy (since 1993).
